1. Colony Care & Nutrition

How often do I need to feed my ant colony?

Most active colonies only require feeding 1 to 2 times per week. They need a combination of liquid carbohydrates (sugar water, honeydew nectar, or jelly) for energy and protein (fruit flies, small mealworms) for brood development.

How do I maintain nest hydration and humidity?

Ant-Blox modular nests feature built-in hydration chambers or internal sponge reservoirs. Fill the reservoir with clean water using a pipette once every few days, depending on your species' humidity requirements.

What should I do with my ants during winter?

European species (like Lasius niger) undergo diapause (winter hibernation) between October and March at temperatures around 5–12°C. Exotic tropical species do not hibernate and remain active year-round with steady heating.

2. Modular Architecture & Expansion

When should I connect my test tube colony to a modular nest?

Keep founding queens in their test tube setup until they reach approximately 15 to 20 active workers. Moving a small colony too early into a large nest can cause stress. Once ready, connect the tube to a small Outworld or starter module using standard transit tubing.

Can I put a queen colony inside a gel nest?

No. Gel environments are designed exclusively for short-term worker observation. They are too bright and humid for queen reproduction and brood rearing. Queen colonies must be housed in acrylic, gypsum, 3D, or sand habitats.

How do I expand my Ant City as my colony grows?

All Ant-Blox modules feature standardized side connection ports. Simply attach flexible tubing or direct docking locks to connect new nest blocks or extra foraging Outworlds without disturbing the main colony.

3. Shipping & Live Arrival Guarantee

How are live ant colonies packaged for shipping?

Live colonies are packed in insulated, shock-resistant protective packaging with temperature control measures when necessary. Orders placed before 16:30 CEST on business days are dispatched the same day via tracked carriers.

What is the Live Arrival Guarantee?

We guarantee 100% live arrival on all live colony shipments. In the rare event of loss upon arrival, notify us on delivery day with photo evidence. Furthermore, queen ants receive an extended 2-week survival guarantee when cared for in approved habitats.
